Yup, it's a celebrated chick flick starring Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling. Had the exact premise.
Poor blue-collar boy has a summer romance with rich, educated city girl.
He promises to build her a dream house and dedicate a room so that she can paint.
Family disapproves and takes girl back to city where she meets a wealthy Prince Charming.
Guy's heart is broken, goes through a war, comes back and buys a crappy, dilapidated mansion and starts pouring his heart and soul into remodeling it, with the hopes that girl will eventually come back to him.

It pains me to think about how deluded and fictional most people's perception of reality is. At one time I thought of movies and television as nothing more than a fun and entertaining form of escapism, however the older I get the more obvious it becomes that most people only ever read pulp fiction and form their world-views based off things which they see on television. I wish we weren't so easily brainwashed as a species. I wish the word propaganda was just referencing a myth and that the word propaganda wasn't true to its definition in a palpably functional way. I also wish my penis was ten feet long and articulated, but these are impossible dreams. Truly educating the public is unachievable because true education requires taking the time to absorb and process huge amounts of what most people consider to be extremely boring information. It's not an option for our short-attention-span majority public. They collectively lack the the willpower, discipline and self motivation required for the task even if we did offer it to them for free.
So, mostly I just look at silly people and go: "Ahhhh, you're adorable!" and pretend that I find their delusional ignorance to be an attractive quality.
